Bridges on the Arno

A view of the famous Ponte Vecchio and several other Florentine bridges spanning the Arno, as seen from the Vasari Corridor of the Uffizi. This 1 kilometer long "secret passage" was commissioned by the Medici family to connect the Uffizi with the Pitti Palace.

Medici Fortress

In the background is the Rocca Nuova, or New Fortress, built by Lorenzo the Magnificent in 1475. It sits at the highest point in Volterra, a town with a population of 11,000 which dates back to Etruscan and Roman times.

Palazzo Vecchio

The bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I de Medici with the PalazzoVecchio, Florence's town hall, in the background.  These comprise just a few of the many monuments in the grand Piazza della Signoria.
