A Lovely Town

A pleasant train journey from Amsterdam, Alkmaar is a lovely town to stroll through and a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.

Haarlem Windmill

The De Adriaan Windmill in Haarlem is a 2002 reconstruction of an original which was built in 1779, but unfortunately burnt down in 1932. The cause of the fire was never determined.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

A partial view of the Dutch national museum dedicated to art and history. It was moved to Amsterdam from the Hague in 1808 and contains over a million objects, including masterpieces by Rembrandt and other Golden Age painters.

Alkmaar Street

A typical street in lovely Alkmaar. After the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, I enjoyed walking through this low-key town to the north.

Royal Picture Gallery

This museum is located in The Hague, in the Netherlands. The collection features Dutch and Flemish artists, such as Johannes Vermeer, whose Girl with a Pearl Earring is displayed on the banner above. This museum is well worth visiting and we also visited the Escher Museum on the same day.

Oldest House in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's oldest house, or Het Houten Huis, may be the oldest wooden house in the Netherlands. It is located in the Begijnhof at number 34. It was originally a tradesman's home.

The Beehive

Founded in 1870, the name of this Dutch department store chain (De Bijenkorf) translates to "the beehive" in English. Its flagship store is located on Dam Square in Amsterdam.
