Frauenkirche Dome, Dresden

Looking up from street level to the dome of the magnificent Frauenkirche in Dresden, Germany. Like much of Dresden, the beautiful 18th century church was destroyed in the bombing of WWII and rebuilt after the reunification of Germany. It was finally reopened to the public in 2005.

Cruising the Elbe

This river boat cruises the peaceful Elbe River from Pillnitz Palace to Dresden, Germany. This short cruise was a highlight of our trip to Germany.

I've added a texture from boccacino.

Along the Elbe

Two sphinx-like statues stand guard at the steps leading from the Elbe river to Schloss Pillnitz, not far from Dresden.  I've added  a calligraphy texture from Kerstin Frank Art.

Pillnitz Palace

Pillnitz Castle consists of a complex of buildings located on the Elbe river on the eastern edge of Dresden, Germany. This image shows the upper palace, built around 1722 upon the orders of Augustus II, Elector of Saxony. The baroque gardens are spectacular when they are in full bloom.

I've added textures by Shadowhouse Creations, joes sistah, boccacino and jinterwas from the Flickr free texture group.

Haupstrasse, Dresden

Dresden, Germany is a beautiful city. We had a brief stay there a couple of years ago and I regret that we didn't have more time to see all of the wonderful architecture there. This image depicts one end of the Haupstrasse, a lovely pedestrianized street with trees and statues, including this one called the Golden Rider.  It depicts Augustus the Strong, who established Dresden as a great culture center during his reign.

Thanks to Shadowhouse Creations and pareeerica for the textures I've added.

Dresden Angel

This angel sits atop the University of Visual Arts in Dresden, Germany. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Saxony, Dresden was a cultural powerhouse until it was nearly destroyed by Allied bombing in February of 1945, just months before the end of the war. It has been beautifully restored and merits a visit of several days to experience all its treasures.
